This morning, even before coffee, I got to wake up to a commercial for Nivea ‘Touch of Smoothness’ body wash. This commercial is an example of advertisers/marketers/artists/film-makers trying to get the US to evolve and adapt to a more European tolerance of nudity and sensuality. This commercial focused romantic and lovely lush images of an attractive, exotic young woman, showing skin. In one of the several frames of shower scene, it showed the model with her back to the camera, water from the shower hitting her back, and we see the shape of what could only be presumed to be her breast coming out from her left front side.
Of course, the United States is a long way from European standards of nudity in our commercials (hopefully, anyway), and so this breast was carefully constructed/image-altered/or whatever to be sure it wasn’t “showing anything”.
But see, it did show something. It showed a mainstream commercial on mainstream TV, for a product made for women no less, and it showed or implied an actual naked breast (as if women aren’t completely bombarded by this enough as it is in media). They show gals’ tits on TV commercials all the time in Europe. And ladies, that is how men see it; as girls ‘tits’. It’s Sex. It’s Entertainment. Maybe it’s reassuring of male power and dominance, not celebratory, like media like to fool women into thinking is the case.
In 2008, it was actually groundbreaking (almost, if not entirely) for women to get to see that side-shot of the shower stud in Sex and the City. But now, a woman’s side shot of her naked breast in profile in the shower is just TV at 9 in the morning.
Men and boys get so much entertainment from women’s breasts ‘being allowed’ to be shown in mainstream media and film, and we have to draw the line somewhere. How about in our commercials on TV? Can we just say no to naked breasts in TV commercials until they start showing us side shots of nice penises in Old Spice commercials then?
I long for the day when other women will take issue with this, and I don’t mean just in commercials. Film is the worst offender, followed by TV shows. Porn is a whole ‘nother disaster, where I can’t even find the type of male erotica I am seeking to view, and it’s not even that off the wall! There just isn’t male sex being pandered to women. Anywhere. I bet not even in Europe.
Maybe you haven’t let your mind and eye see enough male hotness in media to know what you are missing and what all the guys are getting. There is some out there, but it is few and far between and you gotta really appreciate it and savor it when you get it. And what makes it all the worse is they market female nudity to us, the females! Whaddup wit dat? Dang.
I suggest not buying this product. Protesting and boycotting are all we have. And our voices. Speak up, write! Demand a naked man from the side in the Nivea commercial, one who’s all lathered up and Photo-shopped to coyly hide any details of his penis, other than size and shape, which is what they did with that gal's breast in the shower.
